Lynn in secondary 1

Time flies.  Today is the last day of term 1 school holidays, and Lynn will be back to school tomorrow.  Due to Covid-19, her Sec 2 term 1 overseas trip planned for 12th/13th March was cancelled.  Things were very abnormal in the first quarter of 2020, and will continue to be so for the rest of the year.

Last year, 2019, she attended RGS at Anderson road.  In the morning, she would take bus 105 from the bus stop before Toa Payoh MRT to school.  The bus journey takes about 20mins, mainly due to heavy morning traffic.

We attended the orientation for Sec1 parents.  It was a proud day for all parents.  A touching experience for me too, as I'm also from an all girls school.  I know that Lynn will enjoy the school life in such an environment, so much girl chatter, so much girlish fun, and no distraction from "smelly" boys:).

The school term started slow, with very little home work and revision.  But instead of picking up, it had stayed this way, even till now.  I have been worried, still am, but there's nothing much that I can do except to encourage her to study more, and keep to the blind faith that the system is different from my time.  At the beginning of this year, I arranged for Chinese tuition for her, as I'm afraid that her Chinese standard is stagnated.  As for the rest of the subjects, I can only hope that she's able to learn well, although not "exam well".

RGS carries out CCA trials and selection instead of allowing the kids to sign up for whatever their greatest interest is.  Lynn signed up for both art club and symphonic band trials (5 choices each kid).  She did indicate that she will choose band (over art club), but she felt extremely disappointed that she failed the selection trial for art club.  But other than the feeling of setback, joining the band (she was successful in band trial) is definitely more beneficial.  She continues to draw on her own as a hobby.  In the band, she learns to play the saxophone.   So far, she enjoyed her band practices and performances greatly.   Recently, she even requested to buy her own saxophone.  I'm so excited that we are able to afford for her to learn another instrument.

Just 3 days ago (during March school hols), Lynn did her grade 5 piano practical exams.  We were extremely lucky, cos the exams from the next day onwards got cancelled due to Covid-19.  I think she will do well for grade 5, because she enjoyed the pieces, and I thought that she plays them reasonably well.  For her piano performance this year (probably in Q3), she choose "Merry-go-round of life".  Again I feel that she may be able to do better this year.  Last year Jun, she played "Hikaru-Nara", but she didn't deliver it well.  I'm glad that she's enjoying her piano a lot more this year.  I wonder if it's due to influence from her classmates, who are probably much more "artsy" than her gang from primary school.

Lynn studied reasonably hard for year end exam.  It was not "enough" from my perspective, but I can't baby her the way I did for her PSLE anymore now that she's in secondary school.  I will have to keep a close watch for this year end, which is another critical year.   At the beginning of this year, I realised that I will probably continue to worry for her for a long time to come.  养儿一百,长忧九十九。。She did better in her technical subjects, such as Math and Science.  Her languages were her weakest.  She enjoyed geography.  I like RGS's unique subject, which is call Inquiry and Advocacy.  It's like GP for secondary kids.  There was a fun, "sensational" question in her year end exam paper that went like "Uncouth people makes bad partners; All RI boys are uncouth".  Lynn told me that everyone talked about this question right after the exams ended.

In the last week of school term last year, RGS moved to Braddell Road.  Nowadays, we leave home at 7am, and drop her off at school before 710.  She comes home by feeder bus (2 bus stops only).   Going to her school's open house last year brought back memories of my own end of J1 move from Bukit Gombak to new campus at Bukit Timah.  New buildings doesn't have "souls", until probably a year into it.  At the beginning of this year, we went for year 2 parents' talk, and it felt much more livelier.

The year 2 talk was very informative.  I'm pleasantly surprised that the school allows all students to take their requested subject combination without the need to stream for it.  So by July this year, we have to make the tough decision of whether to go for all 10 subjects or to take only 9.  I only took 8 subjects, so I can't imagine how she can cope 10 subjects.  But dropping geography or biology or Japanese seems such a waste.

Here are some pictures from last year:

Kyoto/Tokyo 2019

Our year end family trip for 2019 was to Japan Kyoto and Tokyo.

It was our first Autumn-family trip.  It was towards the tail end of autumn in Kyoto, so we get to see a fair amount of autumn sights in rather cold temperature.

Boshi no kawai neko! (Ha, google translate one😆)

Here are 2 random photos of One Piece Museum in Tokyo Tower, which I did not post much on IG.

Kimono outing with Lynn.  The temperature drop during that week in Tokyo, so my plan for family photo in traditional costume did not materialize. Next time maybe!

Another highlight of this trip was lots of anime related shopping and activities.

Here are some of my conquests!

Wish everyone good health, so that travel can resume after covid19 is over!

Heaven knows you

(July 2019)

While I'm writing this in the study room at home, Lynn's beside me, playing on her computer.  I told her "Wow, this is my Sec 2 class photo; I was same age as you now!".

I wonder where's each and everyone in this photo now.  I would like to silently send my wishes to everyone whom I have known in the past.

Way to go!

(Feb 2019)
Boy-girl relationship is full of ups and downs, perhaps because, Men are from Mars and Women from Venus?!  Ha!

WK and I are married for 21 years.  Most years, we do not celebrate our marriage anniversary.  We even tend to not remember it at all.  So, sometime in 2018, I made mental note to myself that we must do something meaningful to commemorate our up and coming 20th year anniversary in Feb 2019.

Finally, we did 3 things.  Firstly, I bought us a set of bracelets from Tiffany.  They are from the men's department, so that it will suit him.  We had them engraved.

Secondly, on the actual day (2nd Feb), which was a Saturday, we went to Fort Canning park, where the Registrar of Marriage is, for photo taking.  I took out our ROM album, and used my mobile phone to take photos of the photos that we took back then.  Using the images as guide, we tried posing the way we did in the old photos, and then I did a collage of the old and new images.  The photos showed how much we changed!

Finally, WK booked a Phuket Clubmed trip for Valentine Day weekend.

In recent years, some friends and relatives confined in me that they are facing serious issues in their marriages.  I'm feel very sad hearing their problems.  The toil of chores, unspoken grievances,  lack of concern and romance, causes people to fall out of love with and respect for each other.  WK and I are quite lucky.  We are not the most affectionate couple, and we are not doing much of the necessary things to maintain a strong marriage.  But we are compatible, love each other, and treats each other truthfully and fairly.  WK's best quality is he makes the effort to be a good husband.  My friend is puzzled as to why I place so much emphasis on "effort".  The reason is a lot of men don't bother at all.

I wish that our marriage will stay strong and happy for many many years to come.  Way to go!!

Halfway!

Jan 2019

I turned 45 last year January.  The low point in my life was end of 30s to early 40s, so I had a good time "recovering" from the low to my happy self again in these past few years as I journey towards mid 40s.

When I was 28, I went with some friends to take “个人专辑”, as in photo album.  I hasn't really thought of doing another one.  But somehow in 2018, the idea came up again, this time round with Lili, Ginny, and Joc.  We scouted a few shops in JB, and finally booked a package and a date for end 2018.  After a few rescheduling, we finally went in January 2019.

The most fun part of this package was that we took bridal gown photos (without groom!).  I was very excited to do that, as I had always wanted to try a different look than my actual wedding gown.  I picked a classic retro looking piece, with lace and beads.  And I love how Ginny and Joc, my singles friends, looked so beautiful in a bridal gown.

I am so thankful for the great friendships and kinships that I blessed with.  Someone just told me that humans can live up to 150, but I hope I will live a good 90 at most.  I so ready to embrace the 2nd half of my journey!!

CNY 2019

(Written and first posted on 27th Jan 2020; reposted to 20th March 2020)
It’s CNY 2020, but this post is about 2019.  I finally did a housekeeping of my mobile photos after a long overdue backup to my comp.  As I delete hundreds of photos from the album, I realized that I should keep track CNY events on the blog rather than ig.  Well here’s the only few photos left of 2019 CNY on the phone album:

Home sweet (and sour)  home

Eldest uncle celebrated 70th BD before CNY. Next year (2021), it will be the year of the Ox, which will be his zodiac year (72), youngest uncle Eric’s year (60), and mine too!

Like many families in Sg, our family photos show the trend of reducing family size. Out of 6 Lim siblings, there are only 3 senior Lim spouses, 7 cousins and 3 grandkids.  Hopefully in the years to come there will be new additions.

My cousins and spouses and Lynn,

The Lim seniors

The first reunion of each CNY is usually my family, the Chan family. Maybe somewhere out there, another “Ms Chan” is also celebrating her CNY with her extended family.

The second reunion of the year. This (2019) was the first year WK’s aunt joined us.  Credit goes to the various Ms Yaps who made the reconciliation and thus the reunions possible!

Our little bundles of joy;  can’t wait to post this year’s (2020) photos, my goodness how tall they have grown!!

It had been more than 20 years.. While the kids grew, we also matured and the relationships kept evolving.  Love them (the kids) all, love you (mummies) all💋!!

And every CNY eve for the past about 10 years, I spendt with my beloved Lim family. In Dec 2018, I used a small styrofoam board to make a Christmas lighting deco. So for  CNY aunt  gave me an even bigger piece of styrofoam to make a lighting deco too. It turned out rather tacky, ha!

And for the first time eldest aunty in law joined us for this night (after the passing of her mum).

And again for the first time, WK mum and aunt joined us in visiting Qiu Yun.  Wow, didn’t realize that 2019 was such a special year.

Wk and I also met up with our Deloitte colleagues.  Hopefully Ginny can join us this year (2020).

Finally, 2 last photos of CNY with present colleagues. We did handicrafts, this the pose with the fan we made.  This year (2020) we made some too.

Returning to work after the holiday break, in my most body hugging cheongsam.

Ha! I hope I don’t post about 2020 CNY only next year!!
